Bumbershoot '84
Official Poster Artwork by T. Michael GardinerBy 1984, Bumbershoot wasn’t just surviving; it was thriving.
That year’s festival featured approximately 200 performers, supported by nearly 1,800 volunteers. When the final numbers were tallied, Bumbershoot turned a profit, a milestone that reinforced its role not only as a cultural force but as a financially sound civic enterprise.
Under the continued leadership of One Reel, the festival had refined its operational model. What began in the 1970s as a broad, joyful experiment had become a disciplined, large-scale production capable of managing hundreds of artists and thousands of moving parts across Seattle Center.
The volunteer base was particularly notable. Nearly 1,800 community members contributed to making the festival happen, a reminder that Bumbershoot’s scale was matched by its civic participation.
Financially, the success of 1984 further demonstrated that ambitious, multidisciplinary arts programming could be both adventurous and economically sustainable.
