Bumbershoot '02

In 2002, Bumbershoot returned to Seattle Center with a renewed sense of purpose.
The previous year had closed on a profoundly difficult note for the nation following the September 11 attacks, and cultural events across the country were grappling with how to move forward. Bumbershoot, produced by One Reel, continued its long-standing tradition of bringing people together through art, music, and shared public experience.
As it entered its fourth decade, the festival remained rooted in the multidisciplinary vision that had defined it since its earliest years. Across Seattle Center, audiences encountered a wide range of programming, from large outdoor concerts to intimate performances and exhibitions spanning multiple art forms.
Even as the music programming drew large crowds, Bumbershoot’s broader cultural scope remained central to its identity. The festival encouraged exploration, inviting visitors to move across the campus and experience different creative disciplines throughout the day.
By 2002, more than thirty years after Festival ’71, Bumbershoot continued to serve as one of Seattle’s most important public cultural gatherings: a place where art, community, and curiosity met under the same umbrella.
