Overview

Bumbershoot '85

In 1985, Bumbershoot faced one of the most significant governance challenges in its history.

After several successful years under the production leadership of One Reel, Seattle Center moved to replace the organization with a local rock promoter. The proposal marked a dramatic potential shift, one that many feared would narrow the festival’s multidisciplinary identity.

The response was swift and public.

Members of the Bumbershoot Advisory Commission, artists, and community advocates voiced strong opposition. Public hearings were held. Debate intensified. What followed became known informally as the “Bumberwars.”

At stake was more than a production contract. The central question was whether Bumbershoot would remain a broad, cross-disciplinary arts festival, spanning music, dance, theater, film, literary arts, and participatory programming, or evolve into something more commercially focused and music-driven.

After sustained public pressure and intense civic debate, the decision was reversed. One Reel was reinstated as producer, preserving the festival’s expansive artistic mission.

The episode underscored something important about Bumbershoot’s place in Seattle:
it wasn’t just an event. It was a cultural institution people were willing to fight for.

By the mid-1980s, the umbrella represented more than programming; it represented values: experimentation, access, and a commitment to multidisciplinary art at scale.
