Bumbershoot '13
Design by DKNG
By 2013, the pressures that had been building around Bumbershoot for several years were becoming impossible to ignore.
Rising production costs, increased competition from destination music festivals, and the challenges of sustaining a large outdoor event in an urban setting all contributed to mounting financial strain. For organizers at One Reel, the conversation increasingly shifted from expansion and innovation to a more fundamental question: how could the festival continue to survive under its existing model?
In response, Bumbershoot introduced significant changes to its ticketing structure. Daily admission rose to $62, and the festival rolled out new premium ticket tiers designed to increase revenue and offer expanded experiences for attendees.
These changes reflected a broader shift happening across the live events industry, where tiered ticketing and premium experiences were becoming increasingly common.
Even with these adjustments, the underlying challenges remained clear. The scale and ambition that had defined Bumbershoot for decades also made it difficult to sustain financially in a rapidly evolving festival economy.
By the end of the year, it was increasingly apparent that the festival would need a significant structural change to continue.
