Bumbershoot '06

By 2006, Bumbershoot was navigating a changing festival landscape while remaining true to its roots.

Across the country, large-scale music festivals were gaining popularity and reshaping expectations for audiences and performers. Yet Bumbershoot, produced by One Reel, continued to distinguish itself through its multidisciplinary identity, a festival where music shared space with film, theater, dance, literary arts, and visual art.

Each Labor Day weekend, Seattle Center once again became a vibrant cultural campus. Major music stages attracted national touring artists, while theaters, galleries, and smaller venues hosted contemporary dance performances, experimental theater, author readings, and film programs.

Even as the broader festival industry leaned more heavily toward music-driven events, Bumbershoot maintained the broader vision that had defined it since the early 1970s: a public gathering where multiple art forms could exist side by side.

By 2006, more than thirty-five years after Festival ’71, Bumbershoot remained a defining cultural tradition for Seattle, a place where audiences could encounter both celebrated performers and unexpected creative discoveries under the same umbrella.
