Bumbershoot '04

By 2004, Bumbershoot continued evolving alongside a city whose cultural influence was expanding well beyond the Pacific Northwest.
Produced by One Reel, the festival remained anchored at Seattle Center each Labor Day weekend, presenting the expansive mix of music, film, theater, dance, literature, and visual art that had defined its identity for more than three decades.
As the cultural landscape shifted in the early 2000s, with new independent music scenes, digital media, and emerging artistic forms gaining attention, Bumbershoot continued adapting its programming while holding onto its core idea: a large public festival where multiple disciplines could coexist under one umbrella.
One of the festival’s enduring strengths was its sense of discovery. Visitors could arrive for a concert but leave having experienced a dance performance, a short film program, or a conversation with a writer, a structure that encouraged exploration across art forms.
By 2004, Bumbershoot had become one of the longest-running multidisciplinary arts festivals in the United States. More than thirty years after Festival ’71, it remained deeply connected to Seattle’s creative community while continuing to welcome artists and audiences from across the country.
