Overview

Bumbershoot '01

In 2001, Bumbershoot marked its thirtieth year, entering a milestone moment for the festival and for Seattle’s cultural life.

Produced by One Reel, the festival continued its long-standing tradition of transforming Seattle Center into a vibrant, multidisciplinary arts gathering over Labor Day weekend. Music remained a major attraction, but Bumbershoot’s identity still rested on its wide cultural umbrella: theater, dance, film, literary arts, and visual art all unfolding across the campus.

The year also brought a profound shift in the national atmosphere. Just days after the festival concluded, the events of the September 11 attacks would change the country in ways few could have imagined.

Looking back, Bumbershoot 2001 stands as the final Labor Day festival before that turning point, a moment that reflected the openness, curiosity, and creative optimism that had defined the event since its beginnings.

By its thirtieth year, Bumbershoot had grown far beyond the modest ambitions of Festival ’71. Yet its founding idea remained intact: a civic gathering where people could come together to experience creativity in many forms.

As the city and the nation entered a new era, Bumbershoot continued serving as a reminder of the power of art, community, and shared public spaces.
